Pancake tortoises (Malacochersus tornien) are native to Tanzania and Kenya. They do best in a hot (80-115F) and drier environment. We keep ours on either aspen shavings or dry coco coir. They require UV lighting and benefit from regular exposure to real sunlight during the summer when possible.
Pancake tortoises are a smaller species, averaging 6 to 7 inches as adults. They have flat shells that are somewhat flexible, allowing them to crawl into narrow rock crevices to avoid predators. They're also fast and agile climbers.
We feed our pancakes a variety of dark leafy greens, grasses, cactus pads and occasionally vegetables including zucchini, yams and squash as a treat.
Pancakes are a unique and fun species to work with!
